Hagerstown High graduates reunite in Orlando

March 02, 2007

ORLANDO, Fla. - A total of 114 people, many of whom attended high school in Hagerstown from the late 1940s through the mid-1960s, attended the annual "Hagerstown in Orlando" gathering last month at Rolling Hills Golf Club.

The gathering, the largest turnout since the first event in 2004, was organized by the Rev. Ed Murfin, a former Hagerstonian who lives in the Orlando area.

Murfin would have graduated with the Hagerstown High School class of 1953, but he moved before his senior year. Twenty-three of the 321 living members of the class of '53 visited Orlando this year, along with 91 other former local high school graduates, their spouses and friends.

At the luncheon, Murfin showed movies (converted to DVD) he took in 1952 and 1953, including scenes of the 1953 Hagerstown High School graduation, City Park and people coming out the door after worshipping at Emmanuel Evangelical United Brethren (now United Methodist) Church at the corner of Summit Avenue and Howard Street. Among those watching the movies were Bonnie Sowers Lizer and Sharron Ambrose Moser, who were in the church with Murfin at that time, and several others who were close friends of those who were in the movie.
