Commission growth bill OK'd

March 01, 2007

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - The House of Delegates unanimously passed a bill on Wednesday to allow Berkeley County residents to decide whether to expand the County Commission from three to five members, an official with House Clerk Gregory M. Gray's office said.

House Bill 3269 was passed 99-0 after lawmakers agreed to suspend constitutional rules that normally require legislation be read on three separate days. Introduced on the last day to file such bills, the legislation still must pass the Senate by midnight on March 10, the end of the 60-day session.

County leaders have said voters would be asked to consider increasing the size of the commission in a special election already planned for November to vote on a land-use zoning ordinance.
