Turnpike crash kills 2, detours traffic

WILLOW HILL, Pa. - A man was pronounced dead at the scene and another died at York (Pa.) Hospital from injuries he received in a chain-reaction crash that involved three tractor-trailers and three passenger vehicles Tuesday afternoon on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Fannett Township.

James Skinner, 41, of Lower Burrell, Pa., was pronounced dead at the scene of the 3:30 p.m. accident in the westbound lanes near milepost 192, according to Franklin County Coroner Jeffrey R. Conner and Pennsylvania State Police. Conner said another man, the passenger in the 2006 Ford Five Hundred Skinner was driving, was airlifted to York Hospital, where he died.

Conner said the name of the passenger would have to be released by the York County Coroner's Office.

A tractor-trailer involved in a wreck Sunday was being removed from near the Tuscarora Tunnel when the accident occurred, Conner said. That caused a backlog of traffic that was just beginning to move again when a tractor-trailer ran into the rear of a stopped tractor-trailer.

The impact forced the second tractor-trailer to strike a sport utility vehicle and the Ford Five Hundred, Conner said. The Ford became wedged between the second tractor-trailer and the rear of a third, he said.

The impact also forced the third tractor-trailer into a car, Conner said. One person from the sport utility vehicle and two people from the car were taken to Chambersburg Hospital, he said.

About 8:30 p.m. a state trooper at the Newville, Pa., barracks, which patrols the turnpike, said troopers still were at the scene investigating.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Web site stated that all westbound traffic was being detoured at the Carlisle, Pa., interchange. Traffic was being sent north on U.S. 11, then south for 58 miles on Interstate 81 into Maryland, then west on Interstate 70 back into Pennsylvania and east on U.S. 30, re-entering the turnpike at the Breezewood interchange.
