A seventh-grade student at Springfield Middle School was named Youth of the Month for January at Tuesday's Washington County Commissioners meeting.

Commissioners President John F. Barr presented the award, known as the Youth Meritorious Award, to Evan Hardy.

Evan is the son of David and Mary Hardy.

He is enrolled in all merit-level classes, has been on the distinguished honor roll many times in sixth and seventh grades, is working toward high school credit in French and has scored at the advanced level for reading and math on the MSA, according to information provided by the county.

Evan has been involved in Boy Scouts for the last eight years and has helped with the luminaria event at Antietam National Battlefield.

"Evan is a very good student and role model at Springfield Middle School," according to Jennifer Joyce, who nominated Evan for the award.
