Poetry night rescheduled

The Washington County Reading Council Poetry Night has been rescheduled for Tuesday, March 6, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at South Hagerstown High School Library Media Center

Washington County students may read, recite or perform poetry during this night for poets and poetry lovers. The public is invited to attend.

Performers must register by Thursday, March 1.

Registered participants may read or recite an original poem or a favorite published poem. Groups of students may perform a choral reading with a group of friends or dramatize a poem with costumes and props.

Individual performances must be two minutes or shorter. Group performances must be no longer than four minutes. All material must be school-appropriate for all ages.

Local agency offers big cash prizes for contest

The Washington County Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coalition is asking teens to help design public service announcements that raise teens' awareness of the high teen pregnancy rate in Washington County.

The competition invites teens to produce and submit PSAs centered around the theme "sex has consequences." The PSAs will be broadcast and published locally. The contest is open to Washington County residents, ages 13 to 21.

The contest has three categories: a 30-second TV ad; a 10-minute short video; and full-page magazine ad.

Prize money is given to the top three entries in each category. First-place entries will receive $1,000; second place will receive $500; third place will receive $250. Prizes will be awarded at an awards presentation at The Maryland Theatre.
