Harrisburg 69, Chambersburg 25

HERSHEY, Pa. - Harrisburg meant business this time.

The Cougars pressed Chambersburg from the opening tip and jumped out to an 8-0 lead before running roughshod over the Trojans for a victory in a PIAA District 3 Class AAAA tournament game.

Harrisburg took Chambersburg out of its offense, turning the game into a sprint to the finish. The Trojans' frontcourt of DeVonte Merritt and Armond Perez combined for only three shots and Chambersburg totaled only 14 rebounds as a team. The Cougars led 20-9 after one quarter and 28-12 at the half.

Ricardo Brown led Harrisburg with 12 points while Manny Williams added 10. Ben Eby led Chambersburg with seven points.

Chambersburg drops to the consolation bracket of the tournament and will face Reading on Tuesday night at Cumberland Valley High School.


Jefferson 67, Hampshire 42

ROMNEY, W.Va. - Vance Hosby had 19 points and 12 rebounds and Ryland Newman had 11 points and 10 assists as Jefferson defeated Hampshire.

Gerald Stottlemyer had 16 points and nine rebounds and Dewey McDonald added 11 points for the Cougars (16-4).


Brunswick 42, Clear Spring 29

CLEAR SPRING - Brunswick broke open a close game in the fourth quarter, holding Clear Spring to just four points, to win the Maryland Class 1A West East Sectional opener.

Tiffany Curry scored 13 points for the Railroaders, who led 22-17 at the half and 32-25 after three quarters.

Leslie Morgan had eight points to lead the Blazers (3-19) while Carley Snyder had eight rebounds.

Frederick 61, South Hagerstown 17

FREDERICK, Md. - Naomi Carroll had 13 points and 11 rebounds and Frederick led 19-2 after one period in a Class 2A West first-round victory over South Hagerstown on Friday.

Brianna Hammond scored nine points for the Rebels (0-20), who have lost 26 straight dating back to the 2005-06 season.


Trojans' Wilmot finishes fourth

HERSHEY, Pa. - After dropping his first-round match at 152 pounds at the PIAA District 3-AAA championships, Chambersburg's Joey Wilmot won four straight consolation bouts before falling 5-3 to Middletown's Chris Bailes in the third-place bout.

Only the top three qualified for states.

Chambersburg's Jimmy Hughes, the only other area wrestler still alive in the tourney Saturday, fell 3-0 to Manheim Central's Brock Stoltz in the championship semifinals and lost 5-1 to Central Dauphin's Patrick Wieger in the consolation semifinals.

Mercersburg's Barnette earns All-American honors

BETHELEHEM, Pa. - Adam Barnette (37-3) earned prep All-American honors at the National Prep Tournament at Lehigh University by finishing seventh in the 285-pound weight class. Barnette pinned Luke Meleney of Deerfield (Mass.) in 3:49 and defeated Owen Duffy (Loyola, Md.) 3-1 before falling to Mike Landis of Wyoming Seminary (Pa.), 2-1.

Barnette recovered by pinning Hank Speights of St. Albans State (Washington) to secure a spot in the top eight, then suffered a 3-2 loss to Blair's Kyle Hanson. Barnette defeated Duffy 7-0 to earn seventh place.

Senior Bobby Wolford (42-7) came within one win of joining Barnette on the awards stand, but fell 5-2 to Tyricuz Ishway of Boys Latin in the placing round.

Alex Appleman (30-19) and Cody Barrick (35-10) both went 1-2 in the tournament and Dan Mazzei (35-15) went 0-2.


Pennsylvania state championships

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Four area athletes earned top-10 finishes at the Pennsylvania state meet.

For Chambersburg, Anyssa Barbour placed seventh in the girls 60-meter dash in 7.90 seconds and Corey Grove was ninth in the boys 800 in 1:58.38.

For Mercersburg Academy, James Finucane was seventh in the mile in 4:26.99 and Whitney Matthew was ninth in the 200 in 25.78.
