February 19, 2007|From Staff reports

BOONSBORO - A 17-year-old Boonsboro girl died Sunday night after a one-car accident on Alternate U.S. 40 at Toms Road, Maryland State Police said.

Jessica Noel Keyser died at Washington County Hospital, where she was taken after the accident that was reported at 8:38 p.m., police said.

Keyser was driving a 2006 Mazda 6 west on Alternate U.S. 40 when she lost control of the car, police said. The car crossed the road, struck a telephone pole and overturned, and Keyser was thrown from the vehicle, police said.

There were reports of ice on some Washington County roads Sunday, but police said that does not appear to have been a factor in the accident.

Keyser was a junior at Smithsburg High School, where she excelled on the girls soccer team, said Bill Fowkes, the Smithsburg High girls soccer coach.

"She was a very competitive individual," he said.

Keyser transferred to Smithsburg High School from Boonsboro High School at the beginning of this school year, Fowkes said.

The Smithsburg soccer team won the Class 1A state championship last fall.

"I understand she was a really good student," Fowkes said.

"My heart goes out to her family."
