February 19, 2007

A seven-hour standoff between police and a man suspected of shooting and wounding a Jefferson County sheriff's deputy ended Monday night with the alleged shooter dead from a gunshot wound to the head.

The man held police at bay from 10 a.m. until about 5 p.m., according to 1st Lt. S.D. Reckart of the West Virginia State Police.

The deputy, Cpl. Ronald Fletcher, was at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Fletcher was shot while responding to a breaking-and-entering call at a residence in Ranson, W.Va.

Sheriff Ed Boober said the officer was shot after chasing the suspect into the house.

Other police officers talked the suspect into letting them inside to pull the wounded Fletcher from the home, Boober said.
