CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Whitney Whittaker of Shenandoah Junction, W.Va., was crowned Miss Jefferson County 2007 Saturday night at Wright Denny Intermediate School, a spokesman for the event said.

Whittaker is working on a doctorate degree in physical therapy from West Virginia University, said Barry Grimm, a member of the pageant's board of directors.

Whittaker is the daughter of Charles R. Whittaker Jr. and Brenda R. Whittaker. Her talent is baton twirling and her platform is using personal experiences to help others achieve their goals.

First runner-up was Kasha Brown of Charles Town, Grimm said. Brown is a student at Fairmont State University.

Second runner-up was Amber Miller, a Hedgesville, W.Va., resident and student at Shepherd University, Grimm said.

Whittaker will compete in the Miss West Virginia Scholarship Pageant in Morgantown, W.Va., in June. The winner of the Miss West Virginia pageant represents the state in the Miss America Pageant in January 2008.

Roxanne Stagner, director of the Miss Jefferson County 2007 pageant, said roughly $8,000 to $12,000 in scholarship money is given out each year in the local pageant, with the winner walking away with an average of $3,500.

Shepherdstown, W.Va., resident Tiffany Lawrence was crowned Miss Jefferson County last year.

Lawrence won the Miss West Virginia pageant in Morgantown last summer and competed in the 2007 Miss America Pageant in Las Vegas last month.

Lawrence was the emcee of Saturday's pageant and also performed.
