HAGERSTOWN - Two sisters walked away with crowns Saturday night at Hagerstown Community College's Kepler Theater, the site of the Miss Washington County, Miss Western Maryland and Miss Western Maryland Outstanding Teen competitions.

Whitney Colombo, 17, of Hagerstown, was named Miss Washington County. Her sister Audreanna Colombo, 13, of Hagerstown, was named Miss Western Maryland Outstanding Teen.

"I wanted them to say my sister's name first, then say mine, but I knew it was in the hands of the judges," said Whitney Colombo, a senior at North Hagerstown High School.

Sarah Duncan, 19, of Keedysville, won the Miss Western Maryland title.

The winners of the Miss Washington County and Miss Western Maryland titles will advance to the Miss Maryland Scholarship Pageant in June. They also received $2,000 in scholarship money.

Fifteen contestants competed for the Miss Washington County and Miss Western Maryland titles - eight of them Washington County residents.

The contestants were judged across five categories - talent, evening wear, swimsuit, personal interview and on-stage question. The most weight is given to the talent and personal interview, pageant auditor Ken Apple said.

Outgoing title holders - Miss Maryland Brittany Lietz, Miss Washington County Carrie Shank and Miss Western Maryland Autumn Smith - were there to pass the crowns.

For some of them, the moment was bittersweet.

"I told them I can't get through another farewell speech. It's sad," said Lietz, 22, of Annapolis, the outgoing Miss Maryland.

Lawren Hill, 17, of Hagerstown, took first runner-up for the Miss Washington County title. Rachel Marie Salvador, 22, of Hagerstown, took first runner-up for the Miss Western Maryland title.

The first runners-up will receive a $600 scholarship. The second runners-up - Christie Ganoe, 21, of Cumberland, Md., for Miss Western Maryland; and Bindy Boyer, 19, of Greencastle, Pa. - will receive a $400 scholarship.

All contestants will receive at least $50 scholarship in money.

As the Miss Western Maryland Outstanding Teen, Audreanna Colombo will receive a $125 cash scholarship and will represent the area at the Miss Maryland's Outstanding Teen Pageant, which also will be held in June.
