Teachers negotiations canceled

February 16, 2007|by ERIN CUNNINGHAM

The Washington County Teachers Association canceled Thursday's bargaining session, and a new date has not been set.

Negotiations for the 2007-08 school year teachers' contracts have been ongoing since December.

T. Scott Miller, Maryland State Teachers Association UniServ director and chief negotiator, said the association had not had an opportunity to meet because of inclement weather, which prompted the decision to cancel Thursday's talks.

Tim Thornburg, employee and labor relations coordinator for the board and chief negotiator, said he expected the association to present a written counterproposal during the next joint meeting.

Both sides are working on scheduling a date for the next bargaining session.

Thornburg said the board's negotiating team had hoped to be finished with bargaining by Thursday.

He said the Washington County Public Schools Web site (www.wcboe.k12.md.us) will have information about the negotiations by Monday at the latest. The site will provide updated details on the proposals by the board and by the teachers association, Thornburg said.
