You Said It

February 15, 2007

"This person wrote in here about the high school who flew the American flag upside down. It has nothing to do with the fact that they flew it upside down. That's atrocious enough for me, but to have a Mexican flag above that for this country that I fought for as a U.S. Marine, that makes me so mad. I called into Mail Call and said that exact same thing and it wasn't printed. Not only would I like to have people know what is going on out there in California and what was going on with these illegals. I'm proud of our immigrants coming in as long as they're legal. They're illegals, they need to go home. Why is it Mail Call decides what goes in here, what doesn't? I'd like to have The Herald-Mail explain that."

"Media sex and violence are not national security issues. Media sex and violence are parental control issues. If parents are so disconnected that they don't know what their kids are watching on TV, then they are the ones to blame, not the media. A lot of TVs now come equipped with technology that will block objectionable material. Don't blame the media for something parents should be controlling."

"With the publication of a provocative, bold picture of Anna Nicole Smith emblazoned on the front page of Friday's Morning Herald, this newspaper has reduced itself to tabloid journalism. The Herald-Mail should forget about their Newspapers in Education program if our school children are to be subject to a front page picture of a tawdry Playboy centerfold model, even though partially clothed. It may sell newspapers at the checkout counters, but your regular subscribers are offended."

"I live near Pangborn Park and have enjoyed the park and the ducks there for more than 25 years now. This past winter I have seen kids there that are not kind to the ducks, and are destructive to the park. In this cold weather they have destroyed a concrete park bench, there are numerous tree branches in the water that they have been throwing at the ducks, and two days ago, they were walking on the ice that covered the pond. I called the police about them walking on the ice; they said they would send someone over. Well, about an hour later I went by the park, they were still walking on the ice. I called the police again. This morning, there are large, and I do mean large, rocks laying on the ice, and also, they must have destroyed something else as it is laying on the ice. This is ridiculous. Assign an officer or park ranger, if need be, to patrol that park. It is precious to those of us who have always lived here, and we deserve to have what little that is left of it protected."

"On the Daily Mail, Wednesday, Feb. 7, page 9, it says that smokers cause more accidents than a lot of other people. I'm not a smoker. Smokers do have accidents, as do people who don't smoke. I'm an emergency services person, and I do not see the difference in a smoker and a non-smoker. I have been to many accidents in 50-plus years, and never have I heard of one being charged with dropping a cigarette and having an accident or a fire going from a car to another car. I've never seen an agent from an insurance company come to an accident and investigate it. I think you better check your records. You will find that that is not true."

"To the caller who said they were refused service due to no insurance at the urgent care center: That cannot be true, unless they had no one there that could possibly take care of you. It doesn't matter whether you have insurance or not. You can go to the hospital or any urgent care center. They do try to only take care of certain things at urgent care, but they can't turn you down for not having any insurance."

"This is for all those Bush lovers - the world's greatest president, etc. I've got two names: Afghanistan and Osama bin Laden. What about them? What's going on over there? You know we're at war in Afghanistan and that's where the man is who actually thought up the attack on the World Trade Center. What about him?"

"I think it is ridiculous that the county is going to attempt to give their workers thousands and thousands of dollars to buy a home within the county. Make sure you give them enough money to buy a house with a garage so that they can park their county-owned vehicle in it - that they use daily for their personal use at taxpayers' expense, burning up our very expensive gas."

"I agree with the people who wrote in 'You Said It' that welfare people should have drug tests. It disgusts me to be standing in line at the grocery store and they're buying birthday cakes and everything for a birthday party, which I can't even afford. I think it needs to be checked into. There's a lot of lies, and they smoke cigarettes, they wear the best clothes."
