Snowfall closed schools in Washington County, Berkeley and Jefferson counties in West Virginia and Greencastle-Antrim School District in Pennsylvania today.

About six inches of snow will cover the Hagerstown area by this evening, said Tom Kines, a meteorologist with Accuweather.

Travelers throughout Western Maryland and the Baltimore-Washington metro area are warned that traveling will be hazardous for the next few days, officials said.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning that remains in effect until Wednesday at 2 p.m. A winter storm warning means significant amounts of snow, sleet and ice, and strong winds, are expected.

Traveling will be especially dangerous on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Weather officials said dangerous amounts of ice are likely and heavier amounts of precipitation are expected tonight.

As much as half an inch of ice is possible, according to a news advisory.
