Fire reported at Pa. camps

February 12, 2007

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - The cause of a fire reported early Sunday at Capital Camps on Pa. 16 has not been determined, Blue Ridge (Pa.) Deputy Fire Chief Steve Swope said.

"Washington Township (Pa.) police are investigating it," Swope said.

Little damage resulted from the fire in a cabin wall, he said.

He said emergency officials were unsure whether the blaze could have been in a larger, public facility on the camp's property when it was reported at 1:10 a.m., so departments from Waynesboro, South Mountain, New Franklin, Emmitsburg, Md., Smithsburg and Leitersburg also were dispatched.

About 30 firefighters remained on the scene at the cabin, where people had been staying in bunks, Swope said. Those people evacuated safely, he said.

The scene was not cleared until after 4 p.m.
