You Said It

February 12, 2007

"This is to the Washington County caller who said that Bush is one of the better presidents the country has ever had. Apparently, this parent doesn't have any relatives, any children or any grandchildren in the Army or over there in the war right now, does he?"

- Hagerstown

"Everybody is writing in saying 'the Democrats are going to raise taxes, that is all they ever do is raise taxes.' Face it, people, the Democrats have to raise taxes to pay for this trillion-dollar deficit that this Republican administration has created. I heard on the news that Bush is pushing for the tax breaks he created during his administration. He is doing this so it looks good on paper, that he has created tax cuts. It's time to get both of these parties out of office. This two-party system is not working, people!"

"What is the difference if children wait for their bus in the snow or go out and play, snowmobile, make a snowman, have snow battles? Let kids be kids and try not to baby them. Cut the umbilical cord, for they just may have to go out in the world on their own one day. I am not ancient, in my 50s, and lived on a farm on a dirt road. I walked half a mile to meet my bus where two other families' children waited with me; one boy had polio. Buses would not go on a dirt road to pick students up. We were not babied and guess what? We made it in life all the same."

"The new Capital Improvement Plan Priority Ranking System is designed to make sure the county's money is spent on the most important projects. Amazing, isn't it? Makes me wonder what 'system' the county's bureaucrats used in the past."

- Rohrersville

"I think Kelly Moreno's comments were hilarious. I hope there are more to come."

- Hagerstown

"Kelly Moreno, who writes Kelly's Cuts, has a great sense of humor! With that, and her sharp eye for the most inane comments, she doubles the laugh value of You Said It."

- Harpers Ferry W.Va.

"I'm calling to let the reader know that the Edmund Fitzgerald sunk on Lake Superior on Nov. 10, 1975. In the song, it says something about 'the big lake they called Gitche Gumee.' That's what the Chippewa Indians used to call Lake Superior."

- Hagerstown

"To the person complaining about the paper printing debates on religion: If you don't like it, don't read the newspaper on Saturdays. Last time I checked, we have freedom of speech and freedom of the press. You should have enough common sense to realize that this is a free country."

- Hagerstown

"In the middle of all these record-cold temperatures, I just want to say thank God for global warming. I'd hate to think how cold it would be if we didn't have Al Gore's doomsday scenario."

- Myersville

"If we have home rule, we could solve a lot of our own problems, such as the school board problem to institute wards. We wouldn't have to go through Annapolis if we had charter home rule."

- Hagerstown

"I think that it'd be a great idea since everybody is complaining about Robinwood and where to place the hospital downtown, that they should put the hospital out here across from Wonder Bread. There's plenty of property. All they'd have to do is clear out the land that is farm property. It'd be perfect for all, especially when we have accidents out on U.S. 40. They need to continue with this hospital that's downtown. Instead of bringing a shock-trauma unit, let the regular hospital ER be out there still on Antietam Street."

- Hagerstown

"I find it hard to believe that politicians from the Bush administration sit in front of Congress and explain that they lost track of $4 billion in Iraq, but it's no big deal because it happens all the time in time of war. Well, excuse me, but I'm required to balance my budget and my checkbook every day and be responsible for every dollar that I have."

- Sharpsburg

"For those of you who read 'How to fry the best bacon' in Wednesday's paper, I have another suggestion that is delicious. Dredge your bacon in flour and then fry it in a pan. It does not splatter, and it gives the bacon a little bit different taste."

- Boonsboro

"To the person who had to walk three miles to school, uphill both ways: How did you ever get to the bottom? You poor thing, you."

- Sharpsburg

"This is some advice for the female astronaut: I know the answer to how she can get out of this. She's gotta do like all the politicians and the celebrities do. She's got to enter rehab, tell everybody how sorry she is and admit that she needs help. That's all she's got to do. She'll be completely free, so she should take my advice."

- Sharpsburg

"I would like to know why my child does not know how to handwrite but can speak Spanish that they now teach in Washington County schools? Did they pass a law that states you can now print your name on important papers and on the back of your paychecks? How can they accomplish signing their name if the schools don't teach it?"

- Hagerstown

"What Boonsboro really needs is a good pizza shop. The ones that we've had there in the past have been dirty, and the food was not good. Let's have a Pizza Hut or some kind of a good pizza shop in Boonsboro."

- Boonsboro

"To the person who made the comment about ... wasn't worried about morals and an unjust war and invasion of a foreign country and killing of innocent people: What do you think Saddam was doing before we went over there? Why aren't you people holding Hillary Clinton and Jay Rockefeller accountable for this, as well as George Bush, since they all said the same thing? All the liberal Democrats who were in the Senate said the same thing back in 2001 and 2002 - and even Bill Clinton was saying this back in 1999. I think I already know the answer to that. That's because you just worried about the liberal Democrats being in power, and could care nothing about the U.S. or innocent people dying under Hussein or anything else."
