Fire displaces Morgan Co. family

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - A fire displaced a family in southern Morgan County, W.Va., Friday night, South Morgan Volunteer Fire Department safety officer Gladston Michael said.

No one was injured.

Firefighters from five departments in West Virginia and Virginia were dispatched at 5:37 p.m. to a mobile home at 149 Round Hill Drive in Tri Lake Park trailer park and subdivision, Michael said.

Michael did not know how the fire started at the home off Fish Hatchery Road or the identity of the family members, but said the American Red Cross had been contacted to assist the fire victims.

Units from South Morgan were assisted at the scene by the Berkeley Springs Volunteer Fire Department, Great Cacapon (W.Va.) Volunteer Fire Department, Reynolds Store (Va.) Volunteer Fire & Rescue Co. and Gainesboro (Va.) Volunteer Fire & Rescue Co., Michael said.


Man surrenders following standoff

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A borough man who was threatening to harm himself with a gun surrendered without incident following a two-hour standoff with police Thursday night.

Police said they received a report shortly after 6 p.m. that the man was intoxicated and threatening to harm himself. The department's Special Emergency Team and Hostage Negotiation Team were called, police said.

Police were able to talk with the man and he came out of his house about 8 p.m. The man then was taken to Chambersburg Hospital for a mental health evaluation, police said.

Warrant issued for woman in assault

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Pennsylvania State Police said a warrant has been issued for a woman who assaulted her grandson in December.

Police said the 7-year-old boy was treated for minor facial injuries following the Dec. 1 incident at a Fort Loudon Road home in Montgomery Township.

A warrant on charges of simple assault, endangering the welfare of a child and harassment was filed with Magisterial District Judge David Hawbaker's office for 53-year-old Carol Ann Richard, police said. She is described as white with brown hair and eyes and last was seen driving a dark blue Pontiac Sunbird with Pennsylvania registration FSS-3873.
