February 10, 2007|by DAN DEARTH

SMITHSBURG - A 2003 Smithsburg High School graduate was injured earlier this week while serving with the U.S. Marine Corps in Iraq, his unit confirmed Friday.

The 1st Battalion of the 6th Marine Regiment's main headquarters at Camp Lejeune, N.C., would not release the extent or nature of Dane Fonte's injuries.

Fonte is listed as a lance corporal on his MySpace Web site.

A unit spokesman only would acknowledge that Fonte suffered the injuries Tuesday.

Fonte's family could not be reached for comment.

His high school wrestling coach, Joseph Dietrich, said Fonte was a dedicated athlete who was liked by everyone.

"He practiced all the time," Dietrich said. "I wish him a speedy recovery to get back in the mainstream."

Smithsburg High School football coach Buddy Orndorff said Fonte was an aggressive football player and good leader.

As a senior, Fonte won honorable mention honors on the All-Washington County football team.

"He made it fun to come to practice," Orndorff said.

Fonte and three or four of his classmates joined the Marine Corps after graduation, Orndorff said. Fonte returned home to visit after he graduated from boot camp, he said.

Orndorff said Fonte was proud to serve his country.

"I definitely wish him well," Orndorff said. "He's a fine young man."
