CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. -The Old Opera House will open its 2007 season with "Over the Tavern," a John Dudzick play about a boy confronting his doubts about the Catholic Church in the late 1950s.

The play premieres at 8 p.m. Friday, and will run through Sunday, Feb. 18.

Pat Markland will make his directorial debut at the Old Opera House, leading a cast of seven. Markland, who comes from the Winchester (Va.) Little Theatre, said it was the first time he has ever directed the play.

"Over the Tavern" is a dark comedy centered around Rudy Pazinskis, a 12-year-old Catholic kid who refuses to go to confirmation.

"When I was Rudy's age, I went through something similar. I had many questions and nobody had any answers," said Markland, of Inwood, W.Va.

Dominic Massimino, the 11-year-old actor cast as Rudy, said he could relate to the character.

"I can relate to him because I don't really get a lot of stuff and I am Catholic," said Massimino, a sixth-grader at Shepherdstown (W.Va.) Middle School.
