Local woman to take part in breast cancer walk

February 08, 2007

Melissa Hetzer of Hagerstown will spend a weekend walking to help eradicate breast cancer by participating in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Washington D,C., in May.

The Avon Walk Washington, D.C., is one of a series of weekend fundraising walks taking place from April to October to help raise awareness and funds for access to care and finding a cure for breast cancer.

The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer events are non-competitive, offering participants a choice of completing the distance of a marathon (26.2 miles) or a marathon and a half (39.3 miles) over a weekend. Each Avon Walk attracts several thousand participants from across the U.S., including hundreds of survivors, who together form a virtual community with a shared commitment to defeating breast cancer.

Hetzer was inspired to take part in the Avon Walk in tribute to her deceased grandmother, Rebecca I. Crawford, in addition to some friends and family who have survived breast cancer, and is very concerned about continued funding for access to care and finding a cure.

To help Hetzer reach her fundraising goal of $3,000, send a check made payable to the "Avon Walk for Breast Cancer" to Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, P.O. Box 4583, Hagerstown, MD 21742-4583.

The funds raised at Avon Walks are awarded by the Avon Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity, for five areas: breast cancer medical research, access to treatment, support services, education, and screening and diagnostics. Beneficiaries range from local breast cancer support and care services to national research and education organizations.
