Mail Call

"I agree with the person that's in today's paper from Boonsboro that wants to know why we can't get a restaurant. I'm thinking like maybe a fast- food restaurant and a dollar store. I've been waiting for that ever since the shopping center opened up. Tell them to get on the ball. Let's get one."

- Brownsville

"The second caller who was printed in Mail Call on Monday, Feb. 5, I totally agree with them 100 percent. It ought to be a state-mandated law that if you are seeking government assistance, that you need to be drug tested to receive a check. It ought to be once a month - not random - once a month. If you don't pass, you don't get a check. End of story."

- Broadfording Road

"To the person who wanted to know about not knowing the seasons by the leaves on the tree: It seems to me I saw in the book of Luke or Mark, but if you read Matthew, any of the gospels, it will tell you of things to come. Daniel goes along with the Book of Revelation, but there are things to look for, and that is in Luke, chapter 21:34 in my Bible. There are things in Luke chapter 31:25, but there are also things throughout the gospels that will show you of things to come. One of them is Luke 17:26-30. It explains that what happened in the days of Noah is going to happen again."

"This goes out to the Sharpsburg caller who likes to go out to bars but doesn't like to come home smelling like smoke. Some people like to go out to a smoking bar and don't like to come home smelling like booze. What you ought to do is quit your drinking and don't worry about smoking. If you can't handle either one, move to Utah where all the Mormons live, or a good majority of them, and you can be happy in both aspects of your life. But you gotta quit your drinking before you can go out to the bars, because in bars, you're allowed to smoke. Sorry about your luck."

- Hagerstown

"I think it's ridiculous that the county would help their workers buy homes. Those are some of the best-paying jobs in this county, with some of the most generous benefits there are. And no, I'm not jealous, because I work for the federal government and I have at least as good of benefits. If anybody needed any help, it would be the school teachers, considering the student loan debt they must have and all the education that they need to qualify as a teacher."

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling in reference to all the Bush haters out there who want to impeach him. Bring it on, because the thing about it is, there's nothing to impeach him for. He's trying to do the best job he can. Don't worry, in 2008 you boys are gonna be back in the White House, and let's see what you do about terror and everything. This country is really, really going downhill, and it's really gonna be a shame that if we let the liberals go ahead and run this country we're gonna be speaking either Chinese, Arabic or some other foreign language in about another 10 years or so. I hope not - I hope I'm completely wrong, but God bless America, and I wish everybody felt that way."

"I'm calling about Iraq. The Democrats want to cut and run like they did in Vietnam. They got the atomic bomb and now they want to cut and run in Iraq so Iran can control the world's oil market. It'll come up to $100 a barrel and break our economic power. Democrats won't vote for drilling for oil in Alaska or anywhere else. They can't see that far ahead, so we'll end up paying $100 a barrel and our economy will go out."

- Hagerstown

"This is to the person who made the statement about George Bush's approval ratings. To that person I would like to say one thing: The president has enough sense to know he has to run the country for the good of Americans and he knows we're in a war against terrorists. That's the difference between you and him. He realizes we're at war."

- Boonsboro

"I'm calling about one of the Sharpsburg callers, the negative one. I have yet to find a call-in from that Sharpsburg caller that is positive in any way. This time he talked about the Hagerstown senior citizen who's old enough to remember Pearl Harbor and goes on to liken Bush to McCarthy. President Bush is one of our best elected presidents except perhaps Abraham Lincoln. He's very similar to Lincoln, but President Bush should be commended for the tremendous amount of effort that he puts in to keep us safe in America."
