Mail Call

February 08, 2007

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"As to Americans not supporting the war in Iraq having a negative effect on morale, so be it. I am not sure what morale has to do with an unjust invasion of a foreign country and the needless killing of innocent people. To me the question of morale has nothing to do with what's right or wrong in Iraq. And I am in no way blaming the soldiers there. I wish they were all safely back in the states."

"To the person in Hagerstown who has 'never heard of someone smoking a cigarette having a wreck because of smoking.' As an informed insurance agent, I know that many smokers have accidents because of their habit and some of those accidents have turned out to be fatalities. Do you know what a smoker does if he/she drops their lit cigarette? In some cases the cigarette has flown back into the car after they have thrown it out, either on them, in their backseat, or in some very unfortunate cases into the carseat of their child who is strapped behind them. These occurances send the driver into a frenzy, looking for their lit cigarette, they take their eyes completely off the road and wreck."

"They (BOE) don't let the elementary children go out for recess when it is below 32 degrees, however, they have no qualms about having them stand out in the early morning hours while it is still dark, waiting for the bus when it is 10 below zero. At least by the time they have recess, the sun will be shining and make it a little warmer than when they were freezing in the dark waiting on the bus.

"I wrote in last week regarding a certain doctor practice choosing to drop an insurance carrier, charging to transfer transcripts ... guess what? On Feb. 1 they rescinded the letter of termination and are going to continue with the insurance company. Go figure!"

"I think this is a good time to bring this up to our legislators. Now that our electric bills are going to start going sky high, I think the taxpayers should demand that the inmates at these prison complexes not be allowed to play their stereos and their TVs and leave their lights on 24 hours a day. That's right - there are no restrictions on these inmates as far as their electrical use. As long as they are using earphones, they can watch their TVs and listen to their radios and stereos 24 hours a day. I know what I'm talking about; I've worked down there for more than 20 years."

"I was just wondering where these genius scientists are that are talking about this global warming. I noticed today it didn't get above 18 here at the house. Does that have anything to do with global warming? That's the same way with those freezes out in California where it ruined all that citrus fruit here a couple weeks ago. Is that global warming? I could use some global warming about now."

- Boonsboro

"School board wants more money, teachers want more money, but I never hear food service workers mentioned. Most of them work very hard, and they're shorthanded a lot of times."

- Hagerstown

"I'm a parent, and I just want to say to the BOE: I am so disappointed in you all. In two days, you did not have a two-hour delay, and I have seen small children standing out in the cold waiting for buses. I know that I am not the only parent that feels this way. I have talked to many, and they are just so disappointed."

"I can't believe it. It was so cold this morning, water froze within two to three minutes from being outside. Yet at 7 a.m. here were 5- and 6-year olds getting ready to get on the school bus. What do you think their poor little noses were doing? There should have been a two-hour delay, but there wasn't. Every county around here had one, except Washington County, of course."

"Would the man who came up with the idea to test all welfare people with a urine test, please run for something. We need a man like you in office. That's the most sensible idea I've heard in a long time."

- Hagerstown

"A big thumbs up for the 'Robinwood Five.' The planning for the new hospital site is ill-conceived. There's too many obstacles to overcome and there's too much cost involved."

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling about the Smithsburg caller who says that the president should watch 'CBS This Morning;' the story on the soldier talking about the wounded, and how the president doesn't have to do so because he knows firsthand by visiting Bethesda and other military hospitals around the country. And he does because he is one of the better presidents this country has ever had."

- Washington County

"The other night I was at urgent care and was refused service due to no insurance. I had a severe cut and was bleeding a lot, and I think there should be places for that kind of services that are after hours for people of low income."
