Behind The Score

February 07, 2007

Editor's note: Before the first pitch, the whistle blows or the opening tip, there are many people in Washington County and the Tri-State area who have an impact on sporting events.

People like...

Carol Brashears

Hometown: Hagerstown

Position: Athletic Director, St. Maria Goretti High School in Hagerstown

What is your biggest challenge? "There's never enough time. It's always the next thing to move onto."

What inspired you to do what you do? "I was a P.E. instructor here at St. Maria when the job became available. I thought it was a natural progression."

Who do you root for? "The University of Maryland and Shenandoah University, the school my two sons attended."

What is your favorite sports movie? "'Hoosiers.' The school was small, just like St. Maria Goretti. They were always competitive while going against the bigger opponents."

If you could talk to any sports figure, past or present, who would it be? "Cal Ripken Jr. First, because he's from Maryland and always represented the state very well. He stayed true to the Orioles at a time when people were changing teams all of the time. He pretty much said during his playing career 'this is my job and I'll do it to the best of my ability.'"
