EMS lists activity for January

SMITHSBURG - Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services responded to 109 calls for service in January, according to Capt. James Ulrich.

Those calls included 23 within Smithsburg town limits and 17 calls to areas served by Leitersburg Volunteer Fire Department.

Smithsburg EMS answered 10 calls in its portion of Mount Aetna Volunteer Fire Co.'s response area. Mutual aid calls to other counties included six each to Frederick County, Md., and Franklin County, Pa.

Smithsburg EMS personnel were dispatched to eight calls in the response area of Hagerstown's Community Rescue Service. Five calls were to the Cascade and Pen Mar areas, and 31 calls were handled outside of town limits but not classified into the areas listed previously.

Rsidents complaining of respiratory problems accounted for the most calls during the month.

Three transfers of ambulances and/or personnel to other stations occurred during the month. Two of the transfers were planned, while one was needed to fill a gap in coverage in a busy portion of the county.

The planned transfers included one each to the Volunteer Fire Company of Halfway and to the Clear Spring Ambulance Club to handle calls while their personnel attended annual banquets.

Smithsburg EMS personnel transported 75 patients to area hospitals during the month. Another patient was flown to The Curtis National Hand Center at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore by Maryland State Police medevac helicopter.
