MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A second person has died as a result of a single-car crash on Interstate 81 Saturday night, Berkeley County Sheriff Randy Smith said Monday.

Brian Wade Arbogast, 22, of Slanesville, W.Va., who was being treated at Winchester (Va.) Medical Center, died about 10 p.m. Sunday night, Smith said.

Arbogast was riding in a 2006 Acura that was traveling south on I-81 between the Tablers Station Road exit and the Winchester Avenue exit about 10:45 p.m. Saturday, said Deputy C.B. Rouse.

It appears the driver lost control of the car, which went into the median and began to flip, according to a news release from the sheriff's department.

The car hit a drainage ditch and the guardrail and came to rest in the northbound passing lane, the release said.

Arbogast and another passenger, Laura Nicole Godfrey, 20, of Stephenson, Va., were thrown from the car, the release said.

Godfrey was pronounced dead at City Hospital after the accident, police said.

Smith said Monday that speed appears to have been a factor in the crash. Smith said investigators have not been able to determine who was driving the car and there were no witnesses.
