Eight hours of rock

Rock band The Hybrid will headline an eight-hour, marathon concert Sunday at Hagerstown 10 Cineplex's concert theater.

The group from Chambersburg, Pa., will be the last of eight bands to perform at the all-ages show. Each band will perform a 45-minute set, with 15 minutes to set up.

The Hybrid goes on at 10 p.m. Disorder, a five-piece rock band from Martinsburg, W.Va., will kick off the show at 3 p.m.

Organizer and promoter Jeff Britton said the mega concert is an attempt to support local bands hoping to move beyond garage-band status. Since September 2006, Leitersburg Concert Theatre has played host to several local bands - many of them with members still in high school.

"I think it's great since it's an all-ages show. We usually play at bars," said Chris Boggs, the 24-year-old Williamsport guitarist and lead vocalist for Van Lear, the third act to perform.

Britton said he does not expect the same crowd to stay for the full eight hours, but he thinks people will come out for their favorite bands in the lineup. Still, he's expecting a good turnout at the 500-seat theater.

The Hybrid has been generating a regional buzz, and they've drawn crowds to past shows at Leitersburg, Britton said.

"They're really good for such a young group," he said.

The Hybrid - two high school seniors and three college freshmen - formed seven months ago after its members left other bands, explained the group's drummer and unofficial spokesman David Hoover.

"That's how we got our name," said Hoover, an 18-year-old senior at Chambersburg Area Senior High School.

Hoover said themes of anger, angst and self-determination are common in most of the band's songs, but the band has upbeat songs, such as the acoustic, wordless "Horizon."

"We'll try any idea. If it doesn't sound good, we all know. It has to feel really original," Hoover said.

Doors open at 2:30 p.m.

The lineup is:

3 p.m. - Disorder

4 p.m. - Bland

5 p.m. - Van Lear

6 p.m. - Never Be Known

7 p.m. - Faded Memory

8 p.m. - Defyance

9 p.m. - Anamide

10 p.m. - The Hybrid
