Broadway's 'Pajama Game' is at dinner theater

When the musical-comedy "Pajama Game" hit Broadway in the mid-1950s, it was considered a racy hit.

That's what the Doris Day movie version advertised in promoting the 1957 film, along with a picture of Day in what appears to be nothing but a pajama top.

The Broadway show also is credited with giving famed choreographer Bob Fosse his first big break.

Fosse's choreography brought a sexuality to the musical-comedy with more intense or modern dancing, said Zane Oberholzer Jr., who is directing a local production of the musical-comedy at Washington County Playhouse Dinner Theater in downtown Hagerstown.

The show opens Friday night and runs through March 17.

"Pajama Game," based on the novel "7 1/2 Cents" by Richard Bissell, takes place in the 1950s in an Iowa pajama factory where workers are demanding a 7 1/2-cent raise.

A romance begins to blossom between Babe, head of the union's complaint committee, and Sid, a new factory superintendent.

The show contains some tongue-in-cheek sexual references that children probably wouldn't get, but the show is appropriate for all ages, Oberholzer said.

Oberholzer said he was drawn to direct this production because of its outlandishness. Oberholzer likes the challenge of helping actors create the cartoonish characters.

He has directed similarly outlandish productions for the theater such as "Li'l Abner" and "The Wizard of Oz."

This is the first time the dinner theater has presented "Pajama Game," Oberholzer said.
