Mail Call

January 26, 2007

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"I think I am going to dance the whole way to the bank. We recently moved from Washington County, Md., to Franklin County, Pa. Our water bill used to be $300 at good old Washington County, and now it's $30. Our sewer bills are actually billed separately for the amount that we actually flush, not the amount of water that we use. Isn't that amazing that another state, another county can get it right and do it cheaper? Hey, guys, pop over the line. Maybe the county commissioners seeing everybody running for cover, maybe they won't have so many people to tax."

"If the person from Hagerstown had actually bothered to read an article about Oprah Winfrey's new school, he or she would have learned why she chose to build it in Africa. In People Magazine's Jan. 15, issue, Oprah is quoted as saying: 'I became so frustrated with visiting inner-city schools (in the U.S.) The sense that you need to learn just isn't there. (In America,) if you ask the kids what they want or need, they will say and iPod or some sneakers. In South Africa, they don't ask for money or toys. They ask for uniforms so they can go to school.' It's simple: African children appreciate an education and American children do not. Are you so selfish that you feel you need to complain when Oprah, who already donates millions of dollars to U.S. charities, decides to give these girls a chance at a brighter future?"

"I've got a great way to settle this matter about the noise problem at the dragstrip. Simpley take all the complaints, put them on a list, then get an estimate on a sound deadening wall to run the length of the track. Then divide the cost evenly among the ones on the complaint list. That's less than anyone would spend for a lawyer. "

- Washington County

"Everyone acts like the five people fighting the new location of the hospital are the only ones in Washington County who oppose it. Believe me, there are puh-lenty of people who think it's plain crazy to put a hospital out there."

"Once upon a time a young healthy person had a dream that someone would provide them with practically rent-free housing, assistance for fuel, free food, free medical care, a check once a month and free educational opportunities that they could avail themselves of if so desired; that way they would have plenty of time to sleep, go to the mall, smoke, get in trouble, use their cell phone, watch TV and above all, procreate. That dream came true, they got welfare, but for the working class, it's a nightmare."

"Dear Hagerstown caller, when you refer to Devin and these people having a fundraiser for him, it has nothing to do with the government or Iraq. Know your facts. Devin's father has supported the Boonsboro and Washington County area since he was a kid being a volunteer firefighter and EMS participant. These people are his community giving something back to him. If your child was in an accident or a fire, Devin's father would be one of the first to show up and provide him care, not because you asked him to but because he wanted to. So these people have fundraisers for Devin because we want to, not because we have to."

- Boonsboro

"Let me get this straight: Allowing your kid to wear Heelys means they are running you, they are fat, and they have no discipline. The last time I looked you actually have to get on your feet to skate. Granted, maybe some of the kids wreak havoc when they're skating, but leave the kids be. They're only skating. Get a life."

"Two questions that I was hoping somebody in the reading area might be able to answer for me: At the end of a year lease within Hagerstown city limits, is there a limit to how much they can raise your rent from the previous year's rent? And in reading the story about the Allegheny Power rates going up, I was wondering if the Hagers-town city power customers are also gonna be facing the same increase. Thank you very much."

"I'm sorry to hear about the BOE turning these kids away from school because they didn't have their shots. They should have their shots, but it's a possibility that these people do not have the funds to pay for the shots. What I thought would have been a good idea was for them to take the kids to a special room and have a health officer from the Health Department give them the shots for free. I don't think it would hurt one iota."

"This is for all the people who think the hospital should be built on Downsville Pike. Don't they think that the people on Downsville Pike would protest. too? No matter where you put it, people are going to protest. Whenever you buy a house and there's a big open field next to it, you know something's gonna be built there, so you should have bought that land. Once we get the hospital there, the five people that's protesting it, we'll name the five wings (if they have five wings) after them."
