United Way tops fundraising goal

Cynthia Perini said Thursday's horoscope for both her and John Roney predicted someone would "drop the ball" on a project they were working on together.

So much for horoscopes.

Instead, the news was all good when the United Way of Washington County announced it had surpassed the 2006 Campaign goal of $1.75 million by nearly $58,000 at its campaign finale at Robinwood Medical Center.

Under the leadership of Perini and Roney, the campaign raised a record $1,807,971.83.

This amount is $158,402 more than the 2005 total, according to United Way Executive Director Dale Bannon.

"United Way's focus is improving lives, and the finale is a great time to celebrate what surpassing goal really means," Bannon said. "It means being able to provide more support for our community and thanking all the generous donors and volunteers who are the key to our success."

According to Bannon, several factors made up the huge growth in the campaign, including increases in individual giving as well as in the majority of companies' employee campaigns.

First Data Merchant Services received top honors with the Michael G. Callas campaign award, given for increasing its campaign by $135,281, the highest dollar increase among all companies.

Vincent Groh was recognized for his $20,000 contribution toward the end of the campaign - a donation that sparked a matching amount from the community, plus a little more.

Leah Gayman, United Way campaign director, told the story of Lowe's of Hagerstown, where two employees gave in 2005 and more than half gave in 2006.
