Volunteer helps out FRI

January 25, 2007

Name: Ginny Lindsay

Age: 68

Resides in: Smithsburg

Where do you volunteer and what do you do there?: "For several years, I have been volunteering at Food Resources Inc.

"Depending on what is needed, I may take bags of food and sort the contents into categories, help put together packages of food for clients or package the pallets of food from stores into like categories."

What prompted you to begin volunteering?: "FRI is a worthy organization. It works on a shoestring - there are no fancy offices or executives sitting around. Most of the work is done by a few hardworking staff members and many volunteers."

What is your biggest reward as a volunteer?: "I feel good that I can contribute. I've been very fortunate and have had a good career, so when I retired as director of patient services at Chambersburg (Pa.) Hospital in 2006, I wanted to give back to the community."

What impact has volunteering had on your life?: "It was very important to me to stay active when I retired. When Ruth Callaham, FRI executive director, calls me I know she needs help, so I go over and work for a couple of hours."

What keeps you busy when you're not volunteering?: "I'm still involved at Chambersburg Hospital and I also do a lot of other volunteering.

"Other than that, I take care of the home I share with my husband, Tom."

Both natives of Washington County, the Lindsays were in California for 30 years, returning to the Smithsburg area in 1993.
