January 22, 2007

Lara McKaye and Chris Myers, senior advanced-placement government students at St. James School, and instructor Karl Yergey attended the Maryland Youth Inaugural held last week at Saint John's College in Annapolis, according to a press release from the school.

Featured speakers included Gov. Martin O'Malley, Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown and U.S. Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger, D-Md., according to the release. O'Malley and Brown met with Maryland high school students as part of their inaugural tour and to promote their concept of one Maryland.

All three lawmakers answered questions related to secondary and post-secondary education in Maryland. Subtopics included discussion of standardized testing, No Child Left Behind requirements, construction and renovation of school buildings, and budget priorities for Maryland schools, according to the release.

O'Malley also talked about immigration, diversity and racism in his comments to about 300 students, teachers and members of the general public, according to the release.
