You Said It

January 22, 2007

"A caller recently complained about receiving mailed paychecks late or not at all, but also refused to allow wages to be deposited into a direct deposit account. What's that all about? Banks offer direct deposit for free, and the funds are there waiting for you when and if you need them. The complainer could easily solve their own problem by accepting direct deposit. It makes no sense to refuse it."

"It amazes me that anyone could possibly think that last year's statistics for growth could be used for this year's (school enrollment projections.) You have been wrong every year and here we are with overcrowding (in schools.) Hagerstown is growing and you have got to face that reality. We are no longer a total farm-type county. We have become very diversified and we need to accept change."

"Gallon of gas in Frederick, $2.08; gallon of gas in Hagertown, $2.25. Any questions?"

"Opponents of the proposed new hospital at Robinwood are grossly overstating the problems at that location. Try driving through Hagerstown during rush hour or any other time. You will find that to be no easier or faster than driving through the Robinwood area. Furthermore, I believe the average is less than one helicopter flight per day, to the hospital, and due to the urgency of the mission, helicopters will be getting in or out very quickly. There will be no reason for 'hovering' above Eastern Elementary. Your kids' lives are probably at greater risk while riding to school than they are from a passing helicopter."

"If you read in You Said It what waitresses and waiters are being paid, you must realize that's sad. Restaurant owners are asking you to pay their wages. Even the minimum wage is not enough to live on, much less half that amount, so they hope customers will be generous. My point is that the owners should be required to pay a living wage and tips given for good service."

"It seems more and more folks are commenting here about the hospital's faulty decision to build a new hospital at Robinwood. Hospital officials have only themselves to blame for delays and opposition resulting from their end run around their previous assurance that they would not build a hospital on the site next to an elementary school when they got it rezoned for the present medical center."

"This is to the soldier who wrote how disappointed he is that when he come back to the U.S., everything is written in Spanish and whatever kind of language they can put on items that we buy. That would have to be a slap in the face to the soldiers, to fight for a country that we're just about giving away to everybody else. After talking to my uncle, who is a World War II veteran, I found out how little our veterans are given and how little respect they're given. We tell our veterans we don't have enough money to cover things that they need."

"I would like to know what all of the dirt mounds off of Wesel Boulevard at the old railroad tie plant are for."

"I am reading the letter to the editor about the congregation of B'nai Abraham helping two Jewish families from Russia in the 1980s who are now very successful. I think this is wonderful. I think the main complaint today is that the churches themselves are doing very little for the immigrants. The U.S. government and the taxpayers are supporting them in everything."

"It looks like the same old Maryland men's basketball team as it has in the past two years - no defense. They couldn't guard someone in a phone booth. Either the coach is bad or the players don't play on game day what they're taught in practice, but I'm guessing it's a little bit of both. Thank God Gary didn't schedule the Maryland women's team this year. If this keeps up, the men's team will drawing the 2,000 fans and ladies' teams will be getting the sellouts."

"I just returned, Jan. 17, from down in Frederick, Md., the Golden Mile. The price of gasoline is $2.08. Come into Washington County and see just what the difference is."

"The current crisis in Washington County Hospital proves that we definitely need another facility. I do agree that the location that has been chosen is not the most desirable because of the traffic congestion - although it does make it easier for our physicians to get to the sick people. Nevertheless, we need to alleviate the current situation. Get rid of the bickering that we've got, as it's costing every hour that we put this off."
