Side dishes also earned praise. Sweet potato fries were delicious, with a pure sweet potato flavor that stood on its own. The Exotic Rice Blend was a good accompaniment around the table.
We did little more than sample the homemade barbecue sauces. The "original" is basically sweet, the hot 'n' spicy isn't very hot, and the "sweet" doesn't have the flavor to justify the sugar.
With room for one dessert, we split a slice of homemade carrot cake. The cake was dense, carrot-y and good, but we scraped off the thick, sugary icing.
The Savory Sams were happy with Hempen Hill. We had a couple of minor complaints - a tendency to add extra sugar; a couple of fresh foods not really fresh; a tendency toward heavy food. But hey! This is a barbecue joint, not a health food club.
