Mercury spill closes city street

January 21, 2007|by TARA REILLY

A mercury spill in Hagerstown on Saturday closed a section of South Cleveland Avenue while an emergency crew cleaned it up.

The spill occurred on South Cleveland Avenue at the intersection with Tracys Lane.

An official at the scene identified the substance as mercury. Orange cones marked off the area in which the mercury was spilled.

A man wearing gloves and a mask sprinkled a material onto the mercury, then swept it up using a small hand brush. The man then placed the swept up material into a plastic bag.

Hagerstown Fire Police blocked off the road, and Washington County Special Operations Unit vehicles were at the site.

No more information was available Saturday night about how the mercury got there.
