City man charged with robbing Hallmark store

Another store robbery has been linked to a Hagerstown man who has been charged in several recent cases, Washington County District Court records show.

Gregory Leon Battle, 51, of 624 W. Franklin St., Apt. 2, was at Washington County Detention Center on Thursday night, a deputy said, on charges that include armed robbery and first-degree assault.

Battle is accused of jamming his right hand in his jacket, as if he had a gun, and telling the clerk at Fahrney's Hallmark store on Maryland Avenue to give him money, after he appeared to be shopping in the store Dec. 18, a charging document states.

The clerk told police she believed the man who robbed the store had a gun, but she did not see one, the document states. The robber took more than $500 in merchandise and cash, the document states.

The charging document states that police recovered items, including stuffed animals, candles and greeting cards, believed to have been stolen from the store. In an interview with police, the charging document states, Battle allegedly admitted he acted as if he had a gun so he could rob the store.

Battle also is accused of participating in recent robberies of Dollar General, Bob Evans and Smoker Friendly, court charging documents state.
