Nostalgic musical comedy has been in demand

FREDERICK, Md. - "Forever Plaid," the theatrical production that has often been requested by audience members in recent years at Way Off Broadway Dinner Theatre, starts a seven-week run Friday at the theater.

The musical comedy is about four eager young singers who die on their way to their first big concert and get to come back to life just long enough to perform a big show. The musical features popular 1950s harmony songs such as "Three Coins in the Fountain" and "Heart and Soul."

Way Off Broadway presented the show about eight years ago during a New Year's Eve special, says Bill Kiska, whose family has owned the theater since 2001.

Kiska says people enjoy the Stuart Ross and James Raitt musical because it's a feel-good nostalgic show.

The show kicks off the 2007 season for the dinner theater, which opened in 1991 as Keynote Dinner Theatre and became Way Off Broadway Dinner Theatre in 1995, Kiska says.

Other shows being presented this season include the popular "Nunsense II," part of a series of five musical comedies. Most of the Mainstage shows this year are musicals.

The theater also has a children's dinner theater that kicks off its season Saturday, Jan. 27, with "The Ugly Duckling."

The dinner theater typically seats more than 100 people and often sells out shows, Kiska says.

The buffet menu changes with every show. Because "Forever Plaid" is a '50s show, the menu has typical family fare popular at the time.

Cast for "Forever Plaid" includes:

· William "Will" T. Emory Jr. as Smudge

· Jonny Kigin as Francis, aka Frankie

· Shawn Nakia as Jinx

· Kevin C. Rapier or Jordan Stocksdale as Sparky
