Winter too warm? Relax.

January 16, 2007|by RYAN WILLARD

There are some things you can always count on. The basic laws of gravity, the fact that chai tea is delicious and that the seasons in the year follow the same basic principals. Summer really hot. Winter really cold. Just take this winter, for example. Temperatures have been freez ... .

Oh, wait.

Unusually warm winter temperatures this year have thrown people for a loop. We expected to be riding sleds and building snowmen, but instead we have gotten 60-degree weather. I personally enjoy wearing scarves and nice warm clothes. Instead, I am wearing shorts while being very confused about why it is so warm.

So what can you do for fun in a warm winter? People have different habits and pastimes in winter, most of which require freezing temperatures.

But that doesn't mean you can't have fun. Hang out with friends outside. Enjoy the weather. Do activities that get your blood flowing, like football or basketball.

Maybe football doesn't tickle your fancy. Is shopping your idea of fun? Try shopping in new places. Shepherdstown, W.Va., has great restaurants, such as the Blue Moon Cafe. It also has the Lost Dog, a great coffee shop where you can drink and read.

If that doesn't sound good, you can take a hike in the warm weather. The C&O Canal is beautiful right now. With all the leaves off the trees, it gives you an almost tranquil feeling when you are walking or riding a bike. Or go to your local park with friends or by yourself. You don't have to worry about the piercing cold shortening your day.

The simple fact of the matter is that gravity isn't everywhere in the universe, I've tasted horrible chai tea and winter is sometimes warmer then usual. You just have to roll with the punches and realize that you can actually have fun. Even if you aren't freezing to death.
