Inmate stabbed at MCI

January 13, 2007

A Maryland Correctional Institution-Hagerstown inmate was stabbed Friday afternoon as he walked to his housing unit from lunch, said Maj. Priscilla Doggett, spokeswoman for the Maryland Division of Correction.

Doggett said the victim sustained "several stab wounds" in the 12:30 p.m. attack, was treated at the prison infirmary and then taken to a local hospital for treatment.

She did not know Friday by 3 p.m. whether the wounds were life-threatening, but said that when the victim was taken from the prison to the hospital, he was conscious.

Doggett would not release the names of either the victim or the alleged assailant, citing an ongoing investigation. She did not know to which hospital the inmate was transported.

She did say, however, that the victim was serving an eight-year sentence at the prison for sex offense convictions.

Prison correctional officers identified the victim's alleged assailant and placed him in segregation, she said.

Doggett said the motive for the attack will determined through the investigation.
