Retired officer reacts to Bush's speech

January 12, 2007|by TRISH RUDDER

Retired Gen. Barry McCaffrey, who was in Morgan County on Thursday to see equipment made by a local company for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, commented on Wednesday's address by President Bush on the war in Iraq:

· "The president and Armed Forces are in a difficult situation. (New Ambassador to Iraq) Ryan Crocker is the best ambassador I ever saw and (Gen. David) Petraeus is hands-down the best I ever met. But what I didn't hear was a surge of equipment for the Iraqi forces."

· "Twenty thousand troops will help tamp down the violence, but on the other hand, it burdens the military in what is a civil war."

· "Hopefully the Iraq Security Forces will be able to take over eventually. We need to beef up the Iraqi security forces."

· "The next president will pull the plug if this does not work by 2008."
