Town wants individual tax set-off meetings

CLEAR SPRING - As town officials were penciling in the date of the annual tax set-off meeting with Washington County Commissioners on Jan. 23, Town Clerk Juanita Grimm said that might be in question.

Grimm said the new commissioners were apparently favoring holding one big tax set-off meeting at the Maryland Municipal League dinner on Jan. 22 in Funkstown.

That would replace having individual meetings in each county town or, in the case of Clear Spring, an annual joint meeting with Hancock officials.

"Most towns are against it," Grimm said, referring to a letter she received on the subject from another town's clerk.

Councilwoman Carol Hovermale said those meetings are the one chance the residents of the smaller municipalities have to air concerns directly to the commissioners.

A subsequent vote was unanimous in opposition to the one big meeting.

Tentatively, the Clear Spring/Hancock tax set-off meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 23, at 7 p.m. at Clear Spring Town Hall.

All UV lights to be replaced at plant

CLEAR SPRING - A request to replace half of the ultraviolet lights used at the Clear Spring Wastewater Treatment Plant was presented at Monday night's monthly town meeting.

Vice Mayor Steve Blickenstaff said he believed it would be more efficient to replace all of the bulbs at one time, requiring the purchase of 32 lights and sleeves at a cost of approximately $2,800.

The motion was passed unanimously.
