2007 family entertainment preview

A European-style acrobatic circus, a more traditional circus, monster trucks and physical comedians are among the family-friendly entertainment that will be available in the Tri-State area this year.

Also among the year's highlights are several concerts, theatrical performances and magicians.

Jan. 18

Kinder Konzert with Maryland Symphony Orchestra Brass Quintet will be at Hagerstown Community College's Kepler Theater. These free concerts are designed to introduce preschool children to orchestral music and instruments.

Jan. 27 through April 14

"The Ugly Duckling" will be performed at Way Off Broadway Children's Theatre near Frederick, Md.

Feb. 3

The Chambersburg Ballet Theatre Company will perform "Snow White" at The Capitol Theatre in Chambersburg, Pa.

Feb. 4

The Popcorn Players will perform "Aladdin" at The Capitol Theatre.


Feb. 11

Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy will present a reinvention of the circus with European flair, acrobatics and theatrics at Shippensburg University's H. Ric Luhrs Performing Arts Center in Shippensburg, Pa.

Feb. 21

Maryland Symphony Orchestra Percussion Trio will perform a Kinder Konzert, aka a children's concert, at HCC's Kepler Theater.

Feb. 27

The traveling Omaha Theater Company will present the musical "The Berenstain Bears Live On Stage!" at The Capitol Theatre in Chambersburg, Pa.

March 3

The MSO will present a family concert, Just Beyond the Junkyard, featuring musical storytellers Tales & Scales at The Maryland Theatre in Hagerstown.

March 3

The National Marionette Theatre will present "Pinocchio" at HCC's Kepler Theater. Free.

March 10

The Magical Dance of Ireland with Irish dance, music and song will be performed at The Maryland Theatre.

March 15

New Horizons Band will perform for a Kinder Konzert at HCC's Kepler Theater.

March 16

A comedy and magic show at The Maryland Theatre.

March 17

The Exchange Club of Chambersburg will presents its 20th annual Comedy & Magic Spectacular at The Capitol Theatre in Chambersburg.

March 19

The Super Scientific Circus with Mr. Fish and Trent the Mime will perform at Weinberg Center for the Arts in Frederick. Their show includes circus skills and audience participation.

April 6 and April 7

"Alice in Wonderland" will be presented by Other Voices Inc. at Weinberg Center for the Arts. The show will feature Dance Unlimited Repertory Company and actors from the Tri-State area.

April 14

Ali Ghan Shriners Circus will perform two shows at Hagerstown Community College's Athletic, Recreation and Community Center. Includes clowns and acrobats. For tickets, call 301-722-5970.

April 18

Kinder Konzert will feature MSO String Quartet at HCC's Kepler Theater.

April 21

Physical comedian Avner Eisenberg, aka Avner the Eccentric, will perform at Weinberg Center for the Arts. Eisenberg's physical humor includes juggling, mime, magic and general clowning.

April 21 through Aug. 12

"Thumbelina," the journey of a girl the size of your thumb, will be performed at Way Off Broadway Children's Theatre near Frederick.

April 28 through May 27

"Public School Art Exhibition," featuring art by Washington County Public Schools' students, will open at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, City Park, Hagerstown.

May 5

Finals for the first Teen Idol contest will be at The Maryland Theatre, sponsored by the theater and Washington County Free Library. The winner will earn a free trip to New York to audition for "American Idol." For more information, call 301-739-3250, ext. 126.

May 17

Kinder Konzert will feature Smithsburg High School Orchestra at Smithsburg High School's auditorium.

May 20

Truck show and truck pull with dump trucks and semis will be at the Rural Heritage Museum, Washington County Agricultural Education Center, south of Hagerstown. Call 240-313-2839.

May 26 and May 27

Maryland Regional Ballet will present "Swan Lake" at Weinberg Center for the Arts in Frederick.

July 13 through 15

Monster Truck Nationals will be at Hagerstown Speedway west of Hagerstown. Call 301-582-0640.

Aug. 18

At least nine acts are expected to perform at the Festival of Magic at The Maryland Theatre. Performers include Dean Burkett, Hugh McVeagh and Jerry Mullenix.

Aug. 25 through Nov. 3

"The Tale of Peter Rabbit," "The Tale of Tom Kitten" and "The Tale of Johnny Townmouse" will be performed with song and dance as part of "Three Tales from Beatrix Potter" at Way Off Broadway Children's Theatre.
