Master Gardener training

Art classes

Washington County Museum of Fine Arts will offer the following classes:

· Ceramics by hand for adults and teens - Instructor Jane Pingleton-Evans. Learn the basic techniques of ceramic hand building - pinch, coil and slab - while you create unique works of art in clay. Clay and firing is provided. No experience is necessary. 1 to 4 p.m. Fridays, Jan. 12 to Feb. 23. $80 nonmembers, $72 members. $10 materials fee.

· Art for toddlers: Express yourself for ages 2 and 3 - Instructor Allison Weaver. By using their fingers, hands and feet, children will discover all kinds of ways to create great art. A parent or adult, 18 years or older, is required to stay and participate along with the registered child. Fridays, Jan. 19 through Feb. 23. $50 nonmembers, $45 members.

· Young at art for ages 4 to 6 - Instructor Kathryn Lant. 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesdays, Jan. 24 through Feb. 28. $50 nonmembers, $45 members.

· Calligraphy workshop for adults and teens - Instructor Christine Tischer. 1 to 3 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 25 through March 1. $70 nonmembers, $63 members.

· Young at art for ages 4 to 6 - Instructor Kathryn Lant. 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. or 2 to 3 p.m. Saturdays Jan. 27 through Feb. 17. $40 nonmembers, $35 members.

Spring gardening 101 series

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Franklin County Master Gardeners will offer Spring Gardening 101 classes. 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturdays, Jan. 6, Feb. 3, March 10, April 17, May 5 and June 2.

Classes include:

· Jan. 6 - Bird feeding. Methods, advantages and disadvantages for the popular wildlife hobby will be offered by a representative from King's Gap Environmental Center. $5. Snow date is Jan. 13.

· Feb. 3 - Starting seeds. Learn the benefits and basics of starting your own seeds at home. Participants will sow a variety of annuals and vegetables for use in their home gardens. Seeds and materials will be provided. $10. Snow date is Feb. 10.

· March 10 - Hands-on pruning. Instructor Elmer Greey. Participants should dress for the weather and bring pruning shears, to learn about equipment and techniques. The class will be held at Greey's Shippensburg, Pa., home. $10.

· April 17 - Native plant class and sale. Linda Secrist will share her list of favorite native plants. Following the class, a sale of premium native perennials and groundcover plants will be held. Free.

· May 5 - Container gardening. Donna Berard will explain container selection, placement, soils, plant combinations, fertilizers, and pests and diseases. Participants will take home a small container garden. $20.

· June 2 - Your landscape from dream to reality. The class will help participants assess their needs, find the right plants, and address maintenance and problems in their home landscapes. Held at Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation Center garden. $10.

Oil painting class

Wednesday, Jan. 10

Italian cooking

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Roula Jarjour will lead a six-week introductory course in Italian cooking and entre presentation. The course will focus on pastas, sauces, dough making, breads and other special dishes. 6:45 to 8:15 p.m. Wednesdays. Grace Brethren Church, 315 Edwards Ave. Free. Age-appropriate programs are available for preschool-age children through high school-age children. Nursery is available. Light refreshments will follow each cooking session. Basic acrylic painting
