Civil War newspaper index online

January 01, 2007

An index of Hagerstown-area newspapers from the Civil War era is available at www.washcolibrary.org/newsIndex.

Eleven counties in the Tri-State area are covered by the Herald of Freedom and Torch Light, Herald and Torch Light, Hagerstown Mail and Maryland Free Press from 1860 to 1865.

In addition to articles, the index catalogs obituaries, advertisements, legal notices and marriage announcements.

The indexed newspapers are available on microfilm at the Washington County Free Library. Copies of articles can be requested through the Web site.

The index comes through The Historic Newspaper Indexing Project, which started in 1981 with the goal of publishing indexes of newspapers printed between 1790 and 1890.
