Man shot in neck at W.Va. apartment



MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A man was shot in the neck with a small-caliber handgun Saturday night at Berkeley Gardens Apartments along U.S. 11, a Berkeley County Sheriff's Department spokesman said Sunday.

The shooting, which was reported about 8:20 p.m., was the result of an argument over a family matter, Sgt. W.A. Johnson said.

The victim, described as a "young man," was not identified by police. The assailant was described as a young male, Johnson said.

The victim was taken to Washington County Hospital, where his condition was not available Sunday.

Some people in the area of the apartment complex heard one shot, while others heard more, Johnson said. Shell casings were found at the scene, police said.

Man injured in one-car accident



FALLING WATERS, W.Va. - A 2005 Pontiac Sunfire headed south on U.S. 11 Sunday morning went off the right side of the road and struck and broke two utility poles, a West Virginia State Police spokesman said.

The driver of the car appeared to have been thrown from the vehicle during the 5:30 a.m. crash, Trooper Z.L. Nine said.

The driver, who was not identified by police, was taken to Washington County Hospital, where he was being treated in the intensive care unit, Nine said.

The wreck occurred near a campground facility, Nine said.




Two men charged in donation jar theft



BOONSBORO - Two men are charged with theft and conspiracy to commit theft after a Boonsboro Police Department officer recognized a man caught on a surveillance tape as a passenger in a car he had stopped earlier.

Jose Rodolfo Veintimilla, 27, of Germantown, Md., and Alan Steve Llerena, 26, of Derwood, Md., are accused of being involved in the theft of a jar containing about $200 in donations for the Boonsboro Volunteer Fire Co., police said. According to police, Veintimilla was a passenger in a vehicle pulled over just after the theft for speeding.

The theft happened at about 9:30 p.m. Dec. 10, police said. The jar was stolen from the counter of Alex Convenience Store at 280 N. Main St., police said.

Coins totaling $148.64 were recovered, police said.




Information sought on vehicle fire



BIG COVE TANNERY, Pa. - A vehicle was set on fire while it was parked in the yard of its 40-year-old Big Cove Tannery, Pa., owner, Pennsylvania State Police in McConnellsburg said.

The person responsible fled north on Delancy Road after the incident early Saturday, police said.

Money, cigarettes stolen from Sheetz



MCCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Money and three cartons of cigarettes were taken from a Sheetz store by three masked men during an armed robbery late Saturday, Pennsylvania State Police in McConnellsburg said.

At about 10:50 p.m., three men, all believed to be of Hispanic descent, entered the gas station on Lincoln Way East, police said. One man held a handgun, while another had what appeared to be a shotgun, police said.

A third man jumped over the counter and stole cash from the registers, police said.

The men fled toward the rear of the building, police said.
