HANCOCK - Police responding to a domestic call in Hancock on Christmas found a man in his 30s dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Washington County Sheriff's Department Lt. Mark Knight said.
The man's estranged wife reported that the man had pointed a long-armed rifle at her after she stopped by the house in the 6000 block of Grason Road to drop off their children for visitation on Monday about 5:30 p.m., Knight said.
Police who initially responded to the call tried to talk to the man, who was inside the house, but instead heard a gunshot coming from the house about 6:20 p.m., Knight said.
Police called the Washington County Special Response Team to help, Knight said. Negotiators tried to get a response from the man for about an hour before using chemical agents to try to get him to come out of the house, he said.
