Elks assemble Christmas baskets for needy families

December 23, 2006

On Dec. 16, Hagerstown Elks Lodge No. 378 held its annual Christmas Basket Program for those in need.

Esteemed Leading Knight Jim Burroughs coordinated the submission for names by Elks members and ordered the necessary food items, with the help of Allen Moats and Jeff Sines of Weis Supermarket on Eastern Boulevard in Hagerstown. Bob Dooley at Martin's Moving and Storage provided the shipping cartons that served as "baskets."

This year, the lodge assembled 51 Christmas baskets that went out to every corner of Washington County, feeding 166 people over the holidays. Each basket contained the makings for a typical holiday celebration, from milk and cereal to potatoes, yams, vegetables, cranberry sauce, flour, sugar, butter, a loaf of bread and, of course, the turkey.

The Ladies of the Elks provided bags of apples and hard candy for the children.
