Christmas Angel is Greencastle ambassador

Editor's Note: In this 12-part series that runs through Christmas Eve, The Herald-Mail highlights people and organizations who make the holidays brighter for others.

Name: Darlene Leasure

Age: 31

Home: Greencastle, Pa.

Occupation: Mother of 2-year-old Alaina and community volunteer

Organization: Greencastle-Antrim Chamber of Commerce

What do you do to make Christmas brighter?: This is Leasure's second year of portraying the "Christmas Angel" in the Heritage Christmas festivities in Greencastle. She strolls through the crowds, welcoming and greeting people. Leasure, while dressed as an angel, distributes gifts donated from local businesses and answers questions about the community's events.

Why do you do it?: "It's great to serve as a goodwill ambassador for the community and to meet friends old and new, and to see the appreciation for the wonderful gifts," Leasure said.

How can others help?: Leasure suggested that people volunteer to help the Chamber of Commerce with the year-round planning that goes into Heritage Christmas, which is a monthlong celebration.

She also feels the public can contribute by assisting with the various activities offered throughout the event. Those activities include visits with Santa Claus, gingerbread cookie decorating, and horse and buggy rides. The Chamber also needs gifts and gift certificates for distribution at Heritage Christmas.

Comment: "I hope to continue my work with Heritage Christmas, and I encourage others to get involved," Leasure said. "Serving your local community is quite a rewarding experience. You won't regret it."
