Appeal leads to MVAL re-shuffling teams

December 21, 2006|by TIM KOELBLE

Remember when the Monocacy Valley Athletic League shuffled its conferences and realigned based on enrollment?

If not, don't worry. The MVAL's deck of cards has been reshuffled, this time resulting in four conferences that will ease travel pains in most cases.

In the previously planned alignment, South Carroll would have been in the Antietam Conference along with the six other schools that will make up the 1A Division.

"After the Dec. 6 meeting, the Board of Controls approved the changes that we had retaining the three-conference alignment," said Ed Masood, the supervisor of athletics for Washington County. "All 22 principals had been polled and a vote on accepting the proposal was next.

"A majority rules and it was supported by the principals from Washington and Frederick Counties," said Masood of the 2-1 ballot count from the three principals - one representing each county - involved in the voting to accept the measure.

But under that plan, travel issues were going to be a drawback for some schools within the MVAL, especially for those schools making more than one long-distance trip, such as South Carroll making the trek to Washington County to face Clear Spring, Williamsport, Boonsboro and Smithsburg.

"One of the principals was still against the alignment and made an appeal with a concern for scheduling," said Masood.

After a meeting last week and another involving the MVAL athletic directors on Tuesday, the latest MVAL version resulted. Despite being a 1A school, South Carroll will join other Carroll County schools in a 2A conference. North Hagerstown and South Hagerstown will be in a 2A-3A alignment with Middletown, Walkersville and Frederick.

"We produced a revised schedule for football and at our next meeting (Jan. 4) we will tweak schedules for all other sports," said Masood. "There are some concerns with open dates. The conference games will be played all over the board."

North Hagerstown, South Hagerstown, Clear Spring and Williamsport are going to be hustling to find opponents to fill out a 10-game schedule.

"I'm not happy about the scheduling on this one at this time of year," said South Hagerstown athletic director Mike Tesla. "I've already been on the Web sites for Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia and nobody has open dates to fill our week."

South and North each have an open date in Week 2. Williamsport has an open date in Week 3 and Clear Spring is open in Week 7. No other school anywhere in the MVAL has an open date.

The previously approved Antietam alignment presented plenty of travel headaches with South Carroll on board.

Even though the Cavaliers are now aligned with their county mates, they will still come to Washington County twice during the 2007 football season for games at Boonsboro and Williamsport.

Also, not only does South have an open date, but the Rebels will have the pleasure of having two weeks to prepare for a Week 3 game at always-powerful Linganore.
