MERCER, N.J. - Harcum Community College worked the inside game, scoring 65 points in the front court, to stop Hagerstown Community College 83-62 Saturday in the opening round of the Mercer Mixer Tournment.

Ashley Giddens had 17 points - including four step-out 3-pointers - and Angela Brown added 19 points as Harcum (9-0) used physical strength to neutralize HCC's post game.

The Hawks (12-2) fell behind and trailed 39-36 at the half, but came out to take a 42-40 lead early in the second half. Harcum unleashed a quick 9-0 flurry to regain the lead for good.

Samantha Cain had 22 points and three steals as HCC held its own on the boards, only being outrebounded by three, but most of Harcum's advantage came on putbacks.

Shuashanna Faulkner had four points and 11 rebounds for HCC while Shavaughn McKenney had 10 points.




MEN'S BASKETBALL



Shepherd 97, Penn State York 48

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Matt Deaner and Pierrot Bendegue each scored 13 points to lead Shepherd University to a win in which seven Rams scored in double figures.

Danley Shank and Levi Osby had 12 points each while Davon Deans added 11 in his Shepherd debut and Barry Cornish and Derek Gallagher scored 10 each for the Rams (6-1). Bendegue had seven rebounds and five blocks while Shank added seven boards and Fred Lymas dished out eight assists.

Cody Correll scored a game-high 15 points for the Lions (3-5).
