The issue: W.Va. 9, one of West Virginia's most dangerous highways, is being upgraded to a four-lane thoroughfare.

What's new: Ahern & Associates Inc. of Charleston, W.Va., the contractor awarded the bid to construct the first section of the road in Berkeley County between the Eastern Regional Jail near Martinsburg and Opequon Creek, is preparing to begin work. The contractor currently is performing survey work and setting up field offices.

What's next: The second segment of work from Opequon Creek to near the entrance to the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Baker Heights has been advertised, and contractors' bids are expected to opened Jan. 30.
