Have you been naughty or nice? These kids say Santa has nothing to worry about

December 15, 2006|by TIFFANY ARNOLD

Once upon a time, the biggest stressor during Christmastime was determining whether you were naughty or nice.

As the rule goes, Santa Claus only gives gifts to the boys and girls who were nice; the naughty ones will find a lump of coal in their stockings Christmas morning.

And there's no tricking The Man. He knows who's been naughty and who's been nice.

Period.

So where do children in the Tri-State area stand?

They were all nice. Mostly.

Earlier this week at Valley Mall in Halfway, we asked a few little ones (with the OK from a guardian or parent) to share their thoughts on Santa, whether they've been nice or naughty and what gifts they hope Santa will bring this Christmas.

Makayla Murray, 5, of Chambersburg, Pa.

Q: So, what do you think about Santa?

A: He's nice. I like the gifts.

Q: Do you know the rule about Santa and gifts? Being naughty or nice?

A: (Smiling, she nods "yes" with her arms behind her back)

Q: So, have you been naughty or nice?

A: I've been nice. I wasn't naughty.

Will Hawfield, 6, of Boonsboro

Q: So, you believe in Santa?

A: Yeah, yeah.

Q: Do you know the rule for gifts?

A: Be nice or you'll get coal in your stocking.

Q: Which were you? Were you naughty or nice?

A: I've been both.

Q: Really? Both? So do you think Santa will still bring you gifts?

A: Yeah.

Kayla Eichelberger, 4, of Smithsburg

Q: What do you think about Santa?

A: He's good. He gives all the little kids presents.

Q: All the little kids? Do you know the rule?

A: Yeah. He gives gifts to kids who were good.

Q: What about the bad ones? Do they get gifts?

A: No. (She shook her head as she spoke, causing her Little Mermaid earrings to wiggle.)

Q: Were you good?

A: I was good.

Emma Thompson, 4, of Hagerstown

Q: So, tell me about Santa.

A: He brings me presents.

Q: Yeah, but you know he'll only bring you presents if you were good. Were you naughty or nice this year?

A: I've been nice.

Q: That's great. So what do you think Santa will bring you this year?

A: Dora! (That's Dora the Explorer, the cartoon character on Nickelodeon with her own line of toys.)

Anna Grace Fleming, 3, of Clear Spring

Q: So, Anna, do you believe in Santa Claus?

A: Yes. (It should be noted that she was on her way to see Santa at the Valley Mall in Halfway. She made a pit stop at the play area near Sears.)

Q: Tell me what you know about Santa.

A: He puts toys under the Christmas tree.

Q: You know, he only gives gifts to children who were nice. Were you naughty or nice?

A: Nice.

Q: You were? That's great. What do you think Santa will bring you?

A: A Dora car. (Note: She might mean the Dora the Explorer Vamanos Van, a talking SUV with Dora and "Mami" figures.)

Catherine Hawfield, 8, of Boonsboro

(Will's older sister)

Q: Do you believe in Santa?

A: Of course!

Q: So, you know the rules?

A: (She nods)

Q: So, your brother said he's been both. Have you been naughty or nice?

A: Nice.

Q: What do you think Santa will bring you?

A: (She grabs the base of her chin and looks up in the air.) Hmm ... hopefully some board games.
